Cubs

Following a highly successful camp, Cub meetings continue a pace. The first night back saw the Cubs issued with £10 and challenged to make money by buying basic items from the Leader’s Trading Post and selling back finished goods. Lewis Davidson with his team of Matt McDonald, Joshua Longworth and Will Gray emerged as champions, making nearly £140.
Many more Cubs have now finished their Caring Challenge, using their camp experience to tackle the work on campsite hazards.
This Challenge has been awarded to Joe Ebbatson, Gareth Pallister, Aaron Batey, Adam Graham, Will Robinson, Lewis Davidson, Michael Davidson, Matt McDonald, Jack Cook, Ben Nichols, Callum Evans, Ryan Palmer, Joshua Longworth, Will Gray, Jack Swainson, Ben MacKenzie and Jack Senior.
Jonathan Foster earned his Collectors’ Badge by bringing in and talking about his collection of key rings.

Scouts

A contingent of Dalston Scouts joined the huge gathering at Ratlingate over the Bank Holiday weekend to celebrate the Centenary of Scouting. A vast assortment of activities were on offer, ranging from the traditional (fire lighting skills, backwoods cooking, blindfold trails) to the modern (BBC Bus and the radio links to other camps around Britain and stations further afield. More challenging activities included tree climbing, crate stacking, an assault course and the various routes on the mobile climbing tower, whilst for pure fun the water slide was hard to beat (even when the rain came!).
The final closing ceremony was a special occasion for the Troop’s newest member, Rebecca Davidson, as she made her promise in front of 250 Cubs, Scouts and Leaders and received the Dalston Colours and badges from District Commissioner Don McCutcheon.

Dalston Scouting

The origins
Scouting first appeared in Dalston in July 1915 in response to a desire to help the war effort. Twenty two scouts and a scouting teacher were on trial for a few months in the hope that an official troop would be established. A rota of boys was formed to be “on duty” at Dalston War Hospital.
The first scouts were officially enrolled into the new “21st Carlisle Dalston Troop” in August 1915, with Mr Hall nominated by the vicar as the first scoutmaster. Their efforts at the hospital were so appreciated that a request was made to be on duty at Carlisle Station to meet Red Cross trains. When Dalston Hall received a telegram to meet a Hospital train, arrangements were made “for a second telegram to be sent to Scout Fred Walton who will do his best to call up the Scoutmaster and Six Scouts speedily if other circumstances will permit.”

On Saturday August 28th 1915 Sir Robert Baden Powell, the Chief Scout and founder of our Movement, inspected the troops of the Carlisle Association in the park behind the Castle, including twenty scouts and the scoutmaster from Dalston.

Sixty one years later, in August 1986, Chief Scout Major General Michael Walsh ‘dropped in’ to visit the Dalston Scouts in camp on the shores of Loch Tummel.
Six patrols of scouts were scattered over a vast site: he observed the canoeists and windsurfers returning from a circuit of the island, gave practical advice to the shooters at the rifle range, provided encouragement to everyone tackling the assault course and watched as scouts zoomed down the zip wire. Later he inspected some camp kitchens as the evening meal was being prepared before returning to the marquee to sample home made cakes. His subsequent letter was full of praise for the Troop, the wonderful camp and the wide range of activities he had witnessed.

Today Scouting in Dalston is thriving, with all Sections in existence. Youngsters join the Group for fun, friendship, action and adventure. Recent months have seen the Scouts swinging through the trees on a High Ropes course, on the shooting range and climbing wall at Great Tower, being introduced to archery, mountain biking and orienteering in Whinlatter and Grizedale forests, hiking and backpacking in the northern fells, swimming in the spectacular pools of the Upper Eskdale Valley, 10-pin bowling and ice skating.

The adventure begins with the Beavers. To join put your name on the waiting list.
